We give 2nd-grade children Summer Book Bags (that are theirs to keep). Each bag has an assortment of books specifically selected for each child, and we explain to the children that the books are their very own. For some children, these are the first books they’ve ever owned and may be the only reading they will be exposed to all summer long.
Children read more when they have a variety of their own books readily available at home or on the go. Students can continue reading through the summer and make the connection that reading goes beyond the classroom. This can reduce and even prevent a summer slide, but more importantly — it can help launch kids toward being a confident reader for life.
